Bye-bye, bunions: Here are nine ways to wear square-toed shoes
it’s safe to say we’ve hit peak geometry
Podiatrists, rejoice! Pointy-toe shoes are being ousted by square toe rivals or so the rumour goes. You know what that means? Bye-bye, bunions. Hello, 1990s, as the era we can’t get enough of continues its low-key reign.
Although nothing new (the style has been trending since 2019), it’s safe to say we’ve hit peak geometry with Prada, Louis Vuitton and Tory Burch showcasing the foot-friendly toe box for autumn/winter 2024. Whether reimagining existing or reissuing iconic styles, the result is the same—sharp.
Take Scandi brand Ganni’s latest edit of edgy ballet flats featuring eyelets, denim and patent leather or Boden’s no-nonsense Mary Janes—both feminine, now fearlessly so. Likewise, Mango’s textured mules need little else than perfectly poised minimalist separates. Nothing dainty here.
Ditto for the metallic matte slingbacks from COS or their much-hyped cowboy boots that harken to Prada’s current catwalk offering. Pair with culottes, Bermuda shorts (yes, they’re still going strong) or a knife-pleated skirt and roll neck. Add a roomy Crombie coat for instant style.
For an old-school homage, check out Miista’s tribute to the `90s protracted squared-off vamp—classic Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
Prefer a hint of punk? Jonak’s latest crop of block-heeled Derbies and patent platforms is giving Vivienne Westwood energy. Fancy going deeper into the archives? Look to Chie Mihara’s `60s-inspired edit of square-toe loafers in playful colourways and prints.
In the meantime, I’ll be dusting off my square-toe Sézane boots with their covetable rubber platform sole. Dry feet are always a vibe.
Box clever, folks.
