Golden Globes style: Saoirse Ronan is Queen of Frocks

After last year’s #MeToo blackout, colour made a striking return to the Golden Globes. While political statements were restricted to Time’s Up bracelets and ribbons, the style statements were more pronounced, writes Carolyn Moore.

THE HITS

She’s winning yet more accolades for playing Mary Queen of Scots, but we’re going to christen her Saoirse, Queen of Frocks. Only the divine Ms Ronan could make Gucci look positively understated.

The masculine cut of this Alberta Ferretti tux takes the menswear trend to another level, and we don’t know how Judy Greer pulled off dressing as a 1970s Las Vegas magician, but the result is magic.

Twitter declared this look the living embodiment of ‘Big Dick Energy’, and sure enough Rosamund Pike was a fashion force to be reckoned with in her custom creation by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy.

No best dressed list would be complete without the lovely Lupita Nyong’o, and once again she looked a million bucks in a beaded Calvin Klein column – even if it was accessorised with a pair of €40 heels.

Never question Lady Gaga’s commitment to a look. She lost out to Glenn Close in the Best Actress category but she stole the show in her periwinkle Valentino gown, and a blue rinse is the only accessory it needs.

THE MISSES

We love Janelle Monae and her off-kilter style, but this strikingly different offering from Chanel doesn’t cut it. The white sleeves and underskirt distract from an otherwise strong and arresting look.

Ordinarily we’d be there for anyone prowling the red carpet in leopard print, and maybe we’ve just reached saturation point with the season’s most ubiquitous print, but we are not feeling Anne Hathaway’s Elie Saab dress.

With a few tweaks, Amber Heard could have looked sensational in this monochrome Monique Lhuillier gown, but the proportions are off and her fluffy hairstyle kills any chance it had at being chic.

Elements of Kate Mara’s Miu Miu dress stand out as interesting or beautiful in their own right, but the overall effect screams overkill. A nightie meets a suit of armour, the look is badly served with by a severe beauty look.

While Catherine Zeta Jones’ Elie Saab gown offered an injection of colour, there’s something quite dated about this silhouette. It feels very 10 years ago and suggests the star may be in need of a style evolution.
