Product watch: foundations

Rachel Marie Walsh is all about that base this week. Her pick of this season’s foundations work to improve and protect skin while making your face look flawless.

Product watch: foundations

Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Serum Foundation SPF40, €49.50

Good serums feel light and filmy because of a variety of nicely emollient slip-agents, silicones and plant oils. These help to distribute antioxidants and other great ingredients evenly across the skin.

They also form the base of Bobbi Brown’s latest makeup, which is especially high in antioxident extracts. Sixteen realistic shades plus tone-correcting pigments and a radiant-matte finish create natural looks to match the natural feel.

The formula is best for normal to dry skin. The presence of some fragrant extracts may bother very sensitive types.

Laura Mercier Silk Crème Moisturizing Photo Edition Foundation, €48, available April 9.

This newbie is the best of Laura Mercier’s already-brilliant foundation options. Mercier has a knack for creating makeup that camouflages flaws and evens tone without hiding the skin’s natural texture.

Her formulas mesh with, rather than mask the complexion. Silk Crème Photo Edition stands out thanks to its impeccable shade range, flaw-blurring pigments and proven anti-ageing skincare ingredients.

The formula provides medium to full coverage and suits all skin types, but the very oily.

Algenist Repairing Tint & Blur Moisturizer SPF30, €46 @ www.SpaceNK.com

This one is technically a tinted moisturiser but the ingredients list is so awesome that I had to include it. Besides, the light-diffusing pigments and tint mean it wears as well as any sheer foundation.

At once an antioxidant serum and a lightweight moisturiser, this is perfect for busy mornings and no-makeup days.

The formula promotes skin repair, natural brightness and healthy collagen growth. Added broad-spectrum SPF20 means your UV protection needs are covered too. All in all, this is a star launch from the San Francisco-based brand.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Ultra Definition Powder Foundation, €36

Urban Decay’s Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup is one of my favourite foundations so the powder version had a high bar to clear. It is a very good base for normal to oily complexions.

It feels weightless and does not dry the skin or cake when you layer it over primer. Light-diffusing pigments even skintone and the finish is velvet-matte. The shade range is very realistic.

Sisley Skinleÿa Anti-Aging Lift Foundation, €134

The price of Sisley’s latest foundation is extreme and I would rather it came in a tube or pump-bottle, both of which do a better job of keeping their contents stable and hygienic than a glass jar.

Still, the formula is irritant-free and exceptionally high in potent antioxidants, moisturisers and anti-inflammatory agents. The ingredients list reads more like that of a luxury face cream than a foundation.

This makeup does not physically lift your skin but the ‘anti-aging’ part of its name is accurate. The shade range is also very good, especially for the fair and porcelain-skinned.

Beauty Clinic

I recently had a birthday and thought I’d visit a beauty counter. After speaking with an assistant about my concerns, I wound up spending a lot of money on an eye cream.

I’ve used it for a fortnight and it hasn’t just failed to improve my under-eye issue, it’s done nothing at all. The jar is now less than half full. Is it OK to return it for refund?

I’ve often wondered why most of us don’t just return skincare products that doesn’t do what the label or advertisement promises. Perhaps it is embarrassment at being somehow duped or even an assumption that our skin is the problem. Returning an expensive item can also be intimidating.

Rest assured that it is not your fault this cream did not lighten/tighten/de-puff your eye area. Nor is it the fault of the assistant, who is not a skincare expert and simply matched your query with a product s/he was trained to sell. You are absolutely entitled to return a product that did not meet your expectations for a full refund.

Don’t worry about having used most of the cream. It is completely reasonable that you tried to determine whether regular applications help. The fact that you gave your purchase the benefit of the doubt should only strengthen your case for a refund.

Can you recommend a non-chalky dry shampoo for dark brown hair?

You are smart to look into this as poorly absorbed dry shampoo can leave brunettes looking somewhat skunk-like. There are a couple of good tinted sprays available for brown hair. Batiste A Hint of Colour Dry Shampoo for Deep Brown Hair, €5.50, is the cheapest and most accessible but I’m not keen on the Glade-like scent, personally. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, Label.m Complete Brunette Dry Shampoo,

€15.98, is unscented and leaves hair feeling thick and soft, even around the roots.
