The darker it gets, the more light our features should catch, it seems, as most winter makeup highlights to some degree. Finely-milled powders like Chanel Camélia de Plumes Pressed Powder, €56, impart the most sophisticated, natural illumination. The surface is printed with feathers that fan into a camellia, one of Chanel’s best-known codes. Oiseaux de Nuit, €52, a complementary eye-shadow quintet, contains similarly sparkly shades of silver, gold, white, silver and graphite. Rouge Allure in “Volage” and Allure Velvet in “La Flamboyant,” €32 each, offer shimmery pink and radiant red lips, respectively.
NARS began in 1994 as a collection of 12 lipsticks, all of which became cult favourites. The brand celebrates 20 years in beauty with Audacious, €30, a new lipstick available in 40 highly-covetable colours. Audacious is a fragrance-free, semi-radiant cream that provides opaque, long-lasting coverage and gives lips a fuller look.
The collection is made up of very wearable variations on classic nude, red, pink and berry, so there is something to suit every complexion. Each shade is named for a unique and iconic woman, e.g. Anna, Marlene, Raquel... Francoise Nars, who counts photography among his talents, made Charlotte Rampling the “face” of Audacious because of her penchant for challenging, often outrageous roles.
YSL fans can create some audacious looks of their own with the brand’s sexy winter collection. “Wildly Gold” includes a Collector’s Palette in “Wild Edition,” €85. The gilded leather case contains bronze, gold, silver and black eye-shadows, pink blush, and fuchsia lippy in sheer and opaque textures. YSL’s best-selling Touche Éclat highlighter, €35, gets a seasonal, “wild edition” makeover with leopard-print packaging. A new scarlet lip lacquer, Rouge Pur Couture Vernis a Lèvres Collector, €35, creates a just-bitten look with one coat and a full-on Marilyn pout with two.
Christmas makeup launches begin this month and Clinique has some sweetie-coloured goodies you can wear before and beyond the party season. “The collection was inspired by the costumes and scenery of The Nutcracker,” says Janet Pardo, VP of Product Development. “The tulles and velvets in vivid pinks and vibrant purples inspired a collection that brings to life the whimsical nature of the performance.”
The collection includes two compacts, “Act I” and “Act II,” €44 each, containing an eye-shadow quad with a powder blush, along with two complementary shades of Chubby Stick Baby Tint Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm, €20. Looks are enhanced by the illuminating Blended Face Powder, €30, in “Snowflake Dreams.”
Long winter evenings are vastly improved by the atmospheric glow of a scented candle. Designer and filmmaker Bella Freud’s fragrances are instant mood-lifters. “Ginsberg is God” is a fresh blend of fig leaf, tomato and vine leaves. “Lion” is a punchy mix of pepper, star anise, nutmeg, cedarwood, vetiver, oakmoss and amber. The Bella Freud “Signature Candle,” a warm, rich scent of cedarwood, amber and Moroccan incense, makes the change of season more bearable.

Red lips and lashings of volumizing mascara is a seductive, foolproof look if you can find two formulas you like. Rouge Ecstasy, €28, has been among my favourite products since its 2013 launch. It’s hydrating and lightweight yet saturated with colour. The lipstick comes in a magnetic case that keeps ingredients clean and stable. Armani adds three reds to the collection this month: “Spice,” “Orient” and “Sultan.” Black Ecstasy Mascara, €32, is a new addiction, available in “Obsidian” black, “Tadzio” taupe and “Wood” bronze. The formula contains a colour-boosting polymer that intensifies pigments while ensuring better, more uniform application.
