Trend of the week: Cashmere

Trend of the week: Cashmere

INSPIRATION

As investment buys go, cashmere is a sartorial sure bet. Lightweight yet warm, its soft fibres (brushed from the downy underhairs of the Inner Mongolian goat) create the perfect union between fashion and function.

To ensure your cashmere proves its worth, consider a few quality control tips:

Spring it back: Pull the sides of the garment slightly and let go.

Bounce in the material means the weave is strong and it won’t sag over time.

Brighter is better: Sure, neutrals are a wardrobe classic but darker colours can often disguise inferior quality. Only high grade hair dyes well so where possible, opt for brighter hues.

10% tip: 100% cashmere warrants higher price points. For a more pocket-friendly purchase try a blended option with a 10% minimum.

Gauge it: The lower the gauge the thicker the knit. Try a winterworthy 3-gauge now and increase to 14 for cool summer nights.

STYLE NOTES

Handwashing cashmere will actually make it softer over time. Use a mild detergent or baby shampoo in cool to warm water. Press out excess water; never wring it by hand.

Dry naturally. Lay it flat on a towel to dry (never on a clothes line) and smooth it back into shape. Avoid heat like radiators and direct sunlight.

Handle with care. Use a cool iron to remove any creases and fold – never hang – the garment using a herbal sachet to ward off pesky moths.

Keep your cashmere well-groomed with a sweater brush to de-pill those ‘bad hair’ days.
