Trend of the Week: The cowgirl

Saddle up, there’s a new trend in town. Think city silhouettes parlayed with contrasting tribal and Americana accents.

Trend of the Week: The cowgirl

INSPIRATION

Isabel Marant chose the Frontier girl as her muse with decorative Navajo knits, Calamity Jane doily tops, yoked cowgirl shirts and studded ankle boots, while Hermes opted for the South American gaucho with baggy leather trousers and knit serape pairings. Riding high on the trend radar is the poncho – a more laissez-faire alternative to the cape, appearing just about everywhere from M-i-H Jeans to Tommy Hilfiger. The look is nonchalant, despite its statement appeal. How will you wear it?

STYLE NOTES

Balance simple separates with a statement piece for maximum effect, eg Cuban-heeled ankle boots with a day dress; fringed poncho with skinny jeans and stilettos.

Accessories like collar tips, oversized belt buckles and feather earrings are pocketfriendly ways to work the trend. Avoid getting too trigger happy, less is more.

Gun-shy? Embroidery detail, intarsia knits and ponyskin finish hint to the trend without alluding to a bold statement.

Not meant for skinny jeans? A stretch flare helps balance proportions. Opt for a faded vintage wash or earthy tones like stone and burnt sienna for a nomadic twist.
