Former Premier League footballer Jorginho has walked back claims linking Chappell Roan to a hotel confrontation in Sao Paulo involving a security guard and his 11-year-old stepdaughter, labelling the incident a “misunderstanding”.

In March, the Flamengo midfielder posted on Instagram alleging that a security guard working for Roan had confronted his daughter and wife, Irish singer  Catherine Harding, after the child recognised the singer at breakfast.

In a follow-up Instagram story on Monday, Jorginho clarified the singer had reached out privately to his wife and his team.

“Since then, I have become aware of new information that has changed my understanding of parts of what happened. Chappell Roan made a public statement, reached out privately to Catherine, and our teams also spoke directly.

“It became clear that she had no knowledge of what took place at breakfast and had not asked anyone to approach them. She was understanding and sympathetic to what had happened to our child.”

Roan, who was in Brazil to perform at Lollapalooza, previously said she felt “sad” for the mother and child who “did not deserve that”, adding the security guard was not working for her and she was unaware of the incident.

Harding, who is from Ardcroney, Co Tipperary, shares a child with her ex-partner, the actor Jude Law. It is thought the youngster involved is the child she shares with Law.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea player said his stepdaughter “cried a lot” after security spoke to her in “an extremely aggressive way”.

In the days after the incident, celebrity bodyguard Pascal Duvier confirmed he was working for another unnamed individual at the time.

Jorginho added: “While we still do not know what prompted him (Duvier) to approach them, and do not believe an 11-year-old could reasonably be seen as any kind of security threat, it is now clear he was not acting on behalf of Chappell.

“It was, ultimately, a misunderstanding in that respect, and I am glad to set the record straight. It is important to me that this is clarified fairly and accurately. I regret the impact that this situation has had on Chappell Roan, Catherine, Ada and our family.

“I will always stand up for my family. But I also know how to recognise when things were not quite what they seemed at first.”

In a previous video shared on Instagram, Roan said: “They did not come up to me. They weren’t doing anything. It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions when they have no reason to believe, because there’s no action even taken.”

Jorginho married singer Harding in Lake Como, Italy, last year. The singer and the footballer, who now plays for Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro, share a son.

Jorginho has two children from a previous marriage to Natalia Leteri.

Grammy-winning singer Roan, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, previously hit out at “entitled” fans for their “creepy” behaviour in a series of TikToks in 2024, where she emphasised the need for boundaries between celebrities and their fans.
