Mythbusters star Jessi Combs dies aged 36 in 'horrific accident'

American professional racer and television personality Jessi Combs has died aged 36 following a "horrific accident".

The Harney County Sheriff's Office said they received a report yesterday that the jet car Combs was driving crashed while attempting to break a land speed record in the Alvord Desert, leading to her death.

They also confirmed the crash caused a jet fuel fire. Combs was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Harney County Sheriff's Office added that the cause of the crash is unknown and is currently being investigated.

Her boyfriend Terry Madden paid tribute to her on Instagram, saying he "did everything humanly possible to save her" following the "horrific accident" and that he "enjoyed every single minute" he had with her.

He added: "I'm not ok, but she is right here keeping my[sic] going..."

According to her website, Combs had a "lifelong dream to become a driver" and "found a love for speed and its machines at a very young age".

Before attempting the record, Combs wrote on her Instagram: "It may seem a little crazy to walk directly into the line of fire... those who are willing, are those who achieve great things... People say I'm crazy. I say thank you..."

Combs hosted MythBusters from 2009 to 2010, and last year appeared as a guest on Jay Leno's Garage.
