Saturday’s TV tips
(2007) Adapted from a science-fiction short story written more than 60 years ago, The Last Mimzy is a bemusing, whimsical but ultimately charming children’s fantasy that makes perfect sense to its pint-sized protagonists, if not to more senior viewers.
The plot follows two siblings who develop extraordinary powers after discovering a mysterious box of toys – which includes a stuffed rabbit called Mimzy – and are unwittingly drawn into a race against time to avert a disaster.
Newcomer Chris O’Neil and Rhiannon Leigh Wryn are both terrific, generating a believable screen chemistry as the youthful heroes.

However, if you can’t wait that long for an X Factor fix, Rochelle Humes and Melvin Odoom present this one-off retrospective in which they talk to the presenting duo about their hand-picked top 10 moments from the talent show’s archives.
Will foamier contestant Olly’s audition make the cut?

Among the other Proms highlights up for discussion tonight are Bach’s solo violin works, which were performed so memorably by violinist Alina Ibragimova at the end of July, and the National Youth Orchestra’s annual visit to the Proms a fortnight ago.
Finally, there is footage and discussion of Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and if all that wasn’t enough, David Owen Norris once again gets ’Inside the Score’.
Bradley Walsh tries to keep a straight face as families from Warwickshire and Kent compete to win a selection of prizes, with the kids taking the lead as usual.

(2003) Helen Mirren and Julie Walters lead a brilliant ensemble cast as best friends Chris and Annie, who hit upon the idea of raising money for leukaemia charities by posing naked for a calendar when Annie’s husband John (John Alderton) dies from the disease.
The friends’ enthusiasm eventually persuades other members of the local Women’s Institute and soon ten other women – including bohemian Celia (Celia Imrie), dowdy housewife Ruth (Penelope Wilton) and plucky Jessie (Annette Crosbie) – are throwing caution and their aprons to the wind.
The idea takes off, as it were, and the calendar girls are propelled uncomfortably into the media spotlight. Nigel Cole’s brilliant British movie film is touching, funny and truthful.
