Soul singer Percy Sledge dies at 73

Percy Sledge, the American soul singer who took "When a Man Loves a Woman" to the top of the charts, died this morning at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Sledge, 73, recorded "When a man Loves a Woman" in 1966 and it reached number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts.

It is also number 54 in the list of Rolling Stone magazine's 500 greatest songs of all time.

His other hits include "Warm and Tender Love", "It Tears Me Up", and "Take Time to Know Her”.

His contributions to the music industry earned him a number of awards, including a Blues Music Award, a Rhythm and Blues Foundation Pioneer Award, and induction into the Delta Music, Louisiana Music, and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame.

Coincidentally Thursday will mark the 49th anniversary of the release of "When a Man Loves a Woman" as a single.
