Sequel to 'The Snowman' to be broadcast this Christmas
A sequel to Christmas TV favourite 'The Snowman' is to be screened this Christmas.
The ÂŁ2m (âŹ1.55m), 24-minute programme, 'The Snowman And The Snowdog', is being screened on Channel 4.
The creator of 'The Snowman', Raymond Briggs, 78, told the Radio Times that he endorsed the follow-up, partly because it was hand-drawn, saying: âIt would have been cashing in to do it before. Now it wonât do any harm, and itâs not vulgar and American.
âIâve never touched a computer, or anything like that. CGI makes everything too perfect, but theyâre sticking to the old ways. Iâm a notorious grumbler, but I found nothing to grumble about.â
Briggs admitted he does not read many childrenâs books and is ânot a fan of Christmasâ, despite the animated version of his famous book featuring a visit to Father Christmas at the North Pole.
âYou canât keep up with the damned things,â he said of childrenâs books.
âIâve never read Enid Blyton. I went once to Roald Dahlâs birthday party so must have read something of his. He was fairly curmudgeonly.â
He told the magazine: âHuge amounts of money have been generated by The Snowman. Iâm not interested. I read itâs sold three million copies, but publishers bandy about numbers that arenât usually true.
âI donât spend anything. I donât like going abroad â the Gatwick airport hell-hole. I buy clothes from charity shops, although I draw the line at trousers.â
The sequelâs co-producer Camilla Deakin said most of the film was hand-drawn because âcomputer-generated imaging can be too perfectâ, but she added that computers were used at the end âto finesse the pictures, adding digital snow and lighting effectsâ.
