This little girl’s poem is slightly terrifying

On Sunday, the LA Times published a selection of poems sent in by kids in the paper’s ’Creativity Corner’.

And the themes were largely what you would expect - the seaside, animals etc. One of them, however, stands out.

The first poem in the section was by Christopher, nine.

Seashells

Seashells are shining. Seashells are like ocean waves. Seashells beam at night.

Nice use of imagery, Christopher.

The second poem was by Skylar, aged eight.

Parakeets

Parakeets are loud. On Friday, I take them out. They are so pretty.

Short but sweet. We like it.

And the third poem was by nine-year-old Gabi. Who goes to the charmingly-named Pegasus School.

Red as Blood

The fire is red as blood. I watch the flames go up in the air as I taste the sadness of the people whose houses have burnt to the ground. I turn back, but all I hear is the bursting and explosion of flames.

That's dark, Gabi. But it is the best one, in fairness.
