Oscar-winning actress Jessie Buckley is set to take on another powerful role about motherhood next year.

The Kerry-born actress made history earlier this year as she became the first Irish woman to win Best Actress at the Academy Awards in Hollywood.

Buckley was the favourite to win the award for her performance in Hamnet, an adaptation of the bestseller of the same name by Irish author Maggie O'Farrell.

Her performance as Agnes, a grief-stricken mother, in the film, which tells the powerful love story that inspired the creation of Shakespeare's timeless masterpiece, Hamlet, earned her the award back in March.

Buckley, who became a mother in 2025, dedicated her Oscar to “the beautiful chaos of a mother's heart”.

She is now set to play another powerful role about motherhood at the Royal Court Theatre in London.

Announcing their next season, the Royal Court Theatre posted about “six world premieres and one epic Broadway transfer” on social media on Wednesday.

The video post features a performance of Naomi in Blue’s latest single Who Knows alongside performers from across the theatre’s new season, including Buckley, Juliet Stevenson, and Tobias Menzies.

Buckley will star in Nina Segal’s play Afterbirth, directed by Maria Aberg.

The play has been described as “a funny, furious and unflinching story about the disorienting reality of life after birth”.

The play will run from January 15 to February 26, 2028. Visit royalcourttheatre.com for more information.
