5 For Your Radar: The Traitors, Electric Picnic, Judy Garland...

Even if you're not going to the country's biggest music festival, there's plenty more to keep you entertained 

Season two of The Traitors Ireland kicks off, and Electric Picnic takes place across the weekend.

Music festival: Electric Picnic

With over 800 performances across more than 50 stages, it will be impossible to see even 10% of what Electric Picnic is offering this year — its best line-up in a long time. Lewis Capaldi, Gorillaz, and Fontaines DC are the headliners across the weekend, but there’s theatre, wrestling, dance, deep and meaningful conversations, and so much more to try and catch.

Theatre: Judy: End of the Rainbow 

Everyman, Cork, Until Saturday, September 5

Focusing on the final months of Hollywood icon Judy Garland’s tumultuous life, Conor Hanratty’s play is set in London in 1969. That's where the troubled star struggled to complete a run of shows at the Talk of the Town nightclub. Hanratty told the Irish Examiner this week that the show is an opportunity to have a look at Garland at her best and perhaps her worst. The string of shows at the Everyman will be followed by a run at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre in September.

Cinema: I Want Your Sex 

General release, Friday, August 28

When fresh-faced Elliot (Cooper Hoffman — son of Philip Seymour Hoffman) lands an exciting job for renowned artist, icon, and provocateur Erika Tracy (Olivia Wilde), his fantasies come true as Erika taps him to become her sexual muse - despite his relationship with Minerva (Charli XCX). But Elliot soon finds himself out of his depth. Akin to last year’s understated Pilion, I Want Your Sex is director Gregg Araki’s first feature since Here Now in 2015.

Siobhán McSweeney returns to Slane Castle to host a fresh intake of potential Traitors and Faithfuls. Last year’s Irish debut was a ratings smash that produced breakout stars (remember retired prison officer Paudie Moloney!?) and a memorable winning trio — this time the deception, Round Table rows, and late-night murders start all over again, with up to €50,000 on the line.

Connolly’s of Leap, Thursday and Friday, September 3-4

Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow plays his first gigs in a long time in the intimate environs of Connolly’s of Leap as he tries out some new songs ahead of a prospective eighth album. He says: “I needed a place to get on stage with my guitar, reconnect with all my old songs, start playing these new ones I have. Connolly’s seemed like the perfect and only place to do it.”
