Former Bosco presenter Gráinne Uí Mhaitiú has died at the age of 72.

Uí Mhaitiú presented the children's television show alongside Frank Twomey in the late 70s and early 80s, and also presented with Seán Bán Breathnach on the Irish language show SBB Ina Shuí.

The former presenter’s death notice read that she passed away “in the wonderful care of the staff in Tallaght University Hospital”. She is survived by her husband Séamas, daughter Aoife and son Connla.

Uí Mhaitiú’s co-presenter, Frank Twomey, who started his career on the children's show, passed away back in 2023, also leaving behind a long legacy in TV and theatre.

The actor, television presenter and producer, best known to people of a certain vintage as "the man from Bosco", also worked on Nighthawks, Fair City and Bull Island and had a popular recurring role on RTÉ's Liveline as part of its ‘Funny Fridays’.

In 2019, Twomey brought his Alone at Last one-man show to Cork Arts Theatres – an ode to Bosco and his life after it.

Uí Mhaitiú’s death marks the end of a nostalgic era for so many who grew up watching her on TV.

Condolences rolled in under her death notice on Sunday, with many sharing their memories of Uí Mhaitiú.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Grainne's family at this sad time. Thanks for all the memories of watching you on TV many years ago which were happiest of times may your gentle soul rest in peace,” one user wrote.

"There is a generation of Irish people sad today at Gráinne’s passing. Her voice and vibrancy on screen is etched into my memory. Such great memories of simpler times. She was iconic and may she Rest In Eternal Peace. Sympathies to her family and friends,” another wrote.

A message of condolence from a user named ‘Dublin 90s kid’, read: “Sorry to hear this, Bosco played a big part in my childhood during the 90's, I would love when Bosco came on the TV, the show provided me with hours of fun. My local park had a summer festival every year and Bosco was always present. I still reflect on the endless laughter I had while watching Bosco. Grainne and her team were fantastic on RTÉ. Rest easy and thanks for the great memorable entertainment.”

People also took to social media to share their sympathies with Uí Mhaitiú’s family.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
