Gigs, comedy, Céilí Mór, boat party: 10 things to do in Cork on St Patrick's Weekend

Bad Manners, Shane Johnson and the Céilí Mór are part of the events in Cork for St Patrick's Weekend.

Paul Dunlea Quintet, Triskel Christchurch, Fri March 14, 8pm: The Cork trombonist and his quality band will play a set that combines original compositions and contemporary takes on favourite standards. The concert is part of a jazz-tinged weekend at Triskel, with Ethan Iverson of The Bad Plus also playing on Saturday.

Seanchoíche, Aula Maxima, UCC, Fri March 14, 8pm: The ‘storytelling platform’ has been running events all over the world, and their contribution to Cork Podcast Festival is centred around the theme of Connections. People are invited to tell their personal anecdotes based on their own experience, or the experience of someone in their life, and fictional pieces are also welcome.

Hothouse Flowers, Cork Opera House, Fri March 14, 8pm: Liam Ó Maonlaí and co roll out the hits from their heyday. Don’t Go? Do go!

Raving to Reels - a Trad Disco, Elizabeth Fort, Barrack Street, Saturday March 15, 2pm-3.30pm: Get the whole family dancing at this free event that promises reels and jigs mixed with contemporary beats.

Boat Party with Shane Johnson, Cork Harbour, Saturday March 15, from 5pm: The house-master of Sir Henry’s/Fish Go Deep fame mans the decks for three hours as the Carrig Aonair cruises around harbour. Nautical but nice.

Jason Byrne: No Show, Everyman, Saturday March 15, 8pm: The Dublin comedian returns to Leeside with a fresh mix of amusing stories and wisecracks.

An Céilí Mór, Cork City Hall, Sunday, March 16, 3pm-6pm: No experience necessary as William (Hammy) Hammond will call such dances as the Ballyvourney Jig, the Siege of Ennis, and the Walls of Limerick. Experienced jigsters will also be on hand to help the newbies. The event is free, but ticketed.

Bad Manners, Cyprus Avenue, Sunday March 16, 6pm: Buster Bloodvessel is back to perform some of his classic tracks at a gig with a nice early kick-off. It has the makings of a fine evening with support from Pontious Pilate & The Naildrivers.

Andy Irvine, Live at St Luke’s, Sunday, March 16, 7.30pm: He’s 82 and still rockin’. Or at least still folkin’. The London-born legend performs a solo show.

Eddi Reader, Everyman, Sunday March 16, 8pm: The former Fairground Attraction singer will surely include their classic hit, Perfect, in her repertoire. Support is by fellow-Scottish singer Jill Jackson.
