Eight Christmas events in Cork: Candlelight concerts, City Hall gigs, panto delights... 

Kneecap, Candlelight Concerts, and the Opera House panto are among the seasonal highlights in Cork in the coming weeks.

1. Candlelight Concerts

Fever’s candlelight concerts launched in Cork last year following the success of the concert series in more than one hundred cities worldwide.

The live musical performances taking place in various venues across Cork this festive season. The concerts create an intimate atmosphere using soft lighting and the use of thousands of LED candles.

This Christmas, a series of the candlelit performances will take place at the Aula Maxima at University College Cork and the chapel at Griffith College Cork.

Concerts include Munster String Quartet will perform a tribute to Coldplay on Thursday, December 5, Friday, January 10 and Saturday, January 18; Hans Zimmer's best works on Friday, December 6, Friday, January 10 and Saturday, January 18 at the Aula Maxima at UCC.

2. Cinderella at Cork Opera House

The stage has been set for another Cork Opera House pantomime extravaganza with the production of Cinderella this festive season. Opening on November 30, Cinderella is set for a 69-show run that will continue through Christmas until January 19.

Performances will take place at 7pm Tuesday to Friday; 2pm and 7pm on Saturdays; and 1pm and 6pm on Sundays.

3. Red Riding Hood at The Everyman

A whimsical adventure of charming woodland folk, hilarious antics and catchy songs is set to entertain audiences at The Everyman this Christmas.

The Red Riding Hood pantomime takes to the stage from November 30 to January 12 and promises to be a treat for all ages.

Special performances of the pantomime will take place in January, with an audio-described performance and touch tour on Friday, January 3 and an ISL-interpreted performance on Saturday, January 4.

A relaxed performance where audience members can make noise, come and go from the auditorium, or take a break in a designated chill-out area in the foyer will take place on Sunday, January 12.

4. Festivities at Live at St Luke's

After almost 20 years together, The Unthanks are bringing their first-ever seasonal album on the road, and will perform winter tunes known throughout the western world mixed with the traditional and the newly written on Friday, November 29.

Bell X1 will make their return to Live At St Luke's with special guests Dowry Strings on Thursday, December 12, Friday, December 13 and Saturday, December 14 for what has become a Christmas pilgrimage.

Cork singer and songwriter Yenkee will also perform at the venue on Saturday, December 21.

Having announced that he is ‘running for president of Ireland in 2025’, Reggie of Blackrock Road will perform the final show of his ‘Reggie for President’ tour at Live at St Luke’s on Friday, December 27.

5. Christmas at City Hall

A host of singers and musicians are set to take to the stage at City Hall this Christmas, including firm favourites Hermitage Green, The Mary Wallopers, Mick Flannery, Kneecap and Stephanie Rainey.

Hermitage Green will return to Cork for their annual Christmas show on Sunday, December 22 fresh from the release of their third studio album Connection in September.

Claudia Boyle in concert with the City of Cork Symphony Orchestra and chorus Viva Voce Choir Cork and Cór Geal Choir will take place on December 12 and proceeds will go to Cork Simon Community.

Dundalk-based trad group The Mary Wallopers are set to return to Cork City Hall on December 23 following their successful debut last year.

Following her appearance on America’s Got Talent, Stephanie Rainey plays her biggest hometown show on Wednesday, December 18; Belfast hip hop trio Kneecap return to Cork City Hall  on Thursday, December 19; and Blarney native Mick Flannery will treat the people of Cork to a performance on Friday, December 20.

6. Connolly’s of Leap

An especially cute and cosy venue during the festive season, the West Cork venue will host a mix of singer-songwriters, musicians and DJs this Christmas.

Renowned Scottish fiddle player Ryan Young is set to play the venue on Saturday, November 30.

Bricknasty, who emerged from Ballymun at the beginning of 2020 as a lockdown studio project, will perform on Friday, December 13.

DUG is set to return to Connolly’s for another gig following their show at the venue this summer and has been tipped by the venue as one “not to be missed”.

Donal Dineen returns to Connolly’s on December 21 for another instalment of Backstory, a new quarterly residency, with special guest Hewan Mulugeta.

Electronic dance DJ Arveene will play Connolly’s on Saturday, December 28 and the sold-out Seanchoíche event exploring the theme of togetherness will take place on Sunday, December 29.

7. The Sea Church

Sea Church is a multidisciplinary venue in Ballycotton housed in the  refurbished St Colman’s Church.

Cork-based band Gina, Dale Haze and The Champions  will perform at the venue on Friday, November 30, Sunday, December 1 and Sunday, December 29.

Alter Ego Comedy Club featuring Chris Kent, Colm O’Regan and Shane Daniel Byrne will take place on Wednesday, December 4.

English new wave and synth-pop band China Crisis will play Sea Church on Friday, December 6; Irish music legend Mary Coughlan is set to take the stage on December 7; and internationally acclaimed Irish soprano Celine Byrne will play the venue on Wednesday, December 11.

Other gigs include HamsandwicH  on Thursday, December 12, and  Jack L, also known as Jack Lukeman, on Friday, December 20.

The Light Runners will bring their unique blend of reggae, roots, and rhythm to Sea Church on Friday, December 27 as part of the venue’s new Culture Nights series and the New Year’s Eve Flash Dance event will bring the ultimate 80s/90s throwback party to the venue on Tuesday, December 31.

8. The Triskel

The Ficino Quartet with Elaine Clark and Lynda O’Connor on violin, Nathan Sherman on viola and Ailbhe McDonagh on cello will perform on Saturday, December 7.

A special programme featuring some of Ireland’s greatest melodies and music for solo piano alongside some festive favourites from pianist Michael McHale will take place on Friday, December 13.

A recital of songs and arias dedicated to the memory of the great soprano and singing teacher Veronica Dunne will be performed by Niamh O’Sullivan and Gary Beecher on Saturday, December 14.

Screenings at the Triskel this festive season will include The Room Next Door, Gilda, Tangerine, The Florida Project, Anora, Housewife of the Year, Record of a Tenement Gentleman, Mrs Robinson, Scrooged, Gremlins, It’s A Wonderful Life, Home Alone, The Muppet Christmas Carol and Die Hard.
