Some of the highlights of the weekend.

Book launch: Cork Folk Festival 1979-2024: Reeling Down the Years by William Hammond

Saturday, October 5, 6pm, Cork City Library

Marking 45 years of Cork Folk Festival, which continues until Sunday, festival co-founder William Hammond has authored a book offering an account of its long journey, documenting some 1,126 artists, 350 grounds and bands, and its enduring role in shaping Cork’s cultural lift — a discography spans recordings from the city’s folk scene dating back to 1929.

Literary Festival: Words by Water, Kinsale

Running until Sunday, October 6

Tara Flynn and Marian Keyes: Appearing at Words by Water in Kinsale on Saturday
Tara Flynn and Marian Keyes: Appearing at Words by Water in Kinsale on Saturday

Words by Waters offers events including interviews, workshops, and events for children. On Friday, Marie Cassidy talks with crime writer Catherine Kirwan about her 15-year career as Ireland’s state pathologist. There’s a walking tour for children at 2pm on Saturday, and you can spend that evening in the company of pals Marian Keyes and Tara Flynn.

Play: Breaking by Amy Kidd

The Everyman Theatre, Cork. Tuesday and Wednesday, October 8-9

The first play by actor Amy Kidd asks questions about how we navigate a world without any simple answers.  Only two characters appear — Sam and Charlie — played by an ensemble cast in this production from Fishamble. When scenes are replayed in different combinations, do we interpret them differently? Does gender, sexuality, age, or ethnicity alter our perception? What does that say about how we perceive the world? How do we find solid ground to judge?

Gig: Valerie June

Connolly’s of Leap, Thursday, October 10

Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Valerie June, from Tennessee, is a regular visit to Ireland — and Cork — and returns to West Cork and Connolly’s of Leap as part of a three-date tour of the country.

Last year, she released Light Beams: A Workbook for Being Your Badass Self- an interactive workbook that builds on themes of mindfulness, harmony, and healing. It should all make for a memorable night.

Streaming: Sweetpea

Sky Atlantic/NOW TV, Thursday, October 10

Based on the 2017 CJ Skuse novel of the same name, Ella Purnell ( Yellowjackets, Fallout) stars in this ‘coming-of-rage’ story.

She plays Rhiannon, a wallflower whose life is passing her by — but then everything changing as she discovers a new, intoxicating power she didn’t know she was capable of — but can she keep her killer secret?. A six-part series, it also features faces familiar to fans of Slow Horses, Ted Lasso, and Bridgerton.
