The acclaimed author Edna O'Brien died aged 93 after a long illness, her agent announced on Sunday. 

Born and raised in Co Clare, she had written over 20 novels during her lifetime. Her first novel, The Country Girls, became the author's most prolific and was banned under censorship laws at the time in Ireland.
