Five for your Radar: New season of The Bear and a stellar festival lineup in Wicklow
Among this week's highlights are The Bear, Cork Midsummer Festival and Neil Jordan's memoir

The second weekend of this event as part of Cork Midsummer is curated by Emer Yip, with sunset arriving at 9.57pm on the summer solstice and the events promising to continue late. Yip explains: “It is very exciting to welcome Kate NV and Cindytalk to play their first Irish gigs in Cork, supported by Cork’s own Howlbux and Portland’s Felisha Ledesma – all of whom are operating on the forefront of audio experimentation and boundary pushing electronic music composition.”

Based on a script from the deaf artist Teresa Deevy telling the story of An Táin through the eyes of Queen Medb, is a new opera from artist Amanda Coogan and composer Linda Buckley along with collaborators Alvean Jones, Lianne Quigley, and the Cork Deaf Community Choir. This immersive production explores one of Ireland’s foundational myths with a fresh perspective on diversity in storytelling, connecting our past with our future.

The third season of the high-octane, claustrophobic show that’s ostensibly about running a new restaurant returns all in one go next Thursday. Season 2’s ‘Fishes’ and ‘Forks’ are two of the best episodes of TV in recent times so expectations are high that Jeremy Allen White, Ayo ‘Ireland’s Own’ Adebiri et al will deliver another sumptuous course.

Following its impressive inaugural outing last year, Beyond the Pale (it’s less than an hour’s drive south of Dublin, hence the name) returns with a stellar lineup this weekend. Jungle, Jessie Ware, and Marc Rebillet are the headliners, while Gilla Band, Alvvays, Romy, and Courtney Barnett are the acts you’ll want to be front and centre for. It sounds like they’ve expanded their arts and food extracurricular activities this year too as Beyond the Pale looks to stake a claim as festival of the summer. Tickets are still available.

The critically acclaimed author and Academy Award-winning director Neil Jordan releases his memoir this weekend. He talks about befriending Jim Sheridan while at University College Dublin and publishing his first collection, 1976’s brilliant , before making his forays into film, with big names and movies discussed along the way.
