Podcast Corner: Joanne McNally works hard to almost save Avril Lavigne show
Joanne McNally plays Who Replaced Avril Lavigne? for laughs from the outset.
Who wouldn’t want to be in business with Joanne McNally right now? BBC Sounds have enlisted McNally for Who Replaced Avril Lavigne? It’s an at best idiosyncratic, at worst confounding series ostensibly exploring conspiracy theories, focusing in on one in particular: an online rumour that Avril Lavigne has been replaced by a body double for most of her career, after tragically suffering an early death.
McNally, co-host of the unstoppable My Therapist Ghosted Me (over 1m downloads a week) and a standup, plays it for laughs from the outset. Her introduction to the first episode goes: “I want to tell you a story, a story that happened around 20 years ago, or maybe it didn’t happen 20 years ago, maybe it did though… The world has just fallen in love with a 17-year-old girl in a tartan skirt. OK that sounds weird when I say it out loud, it looked fine when I wrote it. Can we rewrite that?”
