When you think of Marina Carr’s best work, Portia Coughlan, say, or On Raftery’s Hill, there’s a sense of the plays excavating remorselessly the dark histories of this island, of them impugning a society’s blindnesses and failures, in their mix of myth and folklore, sex and doom. That is their greatness, that is what makes them a thrill to witness.
