Podcast Corner: Irish comedy duo feel their way with the bantz on new show

Comedians Deirdre Kane and Emma Doran were recently seen together on the Graham Norton-hosted Prime Video comedy LOL: Last One Laughing Ireland. Long-time friends, they’ve started this weekly podcast which will see them discuss “what’s delighted them, bewildered them, enraged them, and everything in between. No topic is out of bounds,” says the bio. So far, so bantercast.
They kick things off by talking about the first review that LOL got, a scathing one headlined ‘A great steaming turd’. It’s a little cringy as they name the critic and continue to give out about it throughout the first episode, which was released last week - but then the kicker: They only read the headline, not the full review. Other topics the pair touch on in the opening episode include stealing rather than queuing for items, ADHD diagnoses, and how the rage must build in shop staff over the ineptitude at the self-service queues. Like all new pods, you can’t judge them by their first episode. Doran and Kane will likely find their feet and hopefully live up to the title of the show.
Three more comedians host here: Frankie Boyle, Susie McCabe and Christopher MacArthur-Boyd. Their bio says they’ll “share their subversive and darkly funny opinions on the chaos of the world”. “It’s just us talking,” one of them says at the outset, another adding: “Themes are for cowards.” What ensues - as you might expect from Boyle and co - is talk about Nazis, burgers shaped like poppies, Billy Connolly, brain damage, Formula One and vaping, and lots of giggling. Like Keep it Tight, Here Comes the Guillotine will take a while to find its flow as it seems a little forced in the 40-minute opener. But who would bet against Boyle?
A curious idea that will be interesting to see how it works over a couple of episodes: This podcast shines a light on the MailOnline comments section. Online stunt creators Josh Pieters and Archie Manners are the hosts and each week will welcome a celebrity guest to help them break down some of the wackiest, front-page-worthy statements left under MailOnline stories about the stars. Who better to unpick the media and guess the story than the celebs themselves? Launched on February 19, guests include Kerry Katona and Danny Dyer.
Gearing up for a UK tour, Irish artist CMAT has been doing the podcast rounds recently. After discussing her travel and holiday stories on Alan Carr’s Life’s a Beach, she’s on Off Menu talking about her dream food. If you’ve heard CMAT interviewed before, you’ll know this is hilarious. She’s spot on with the Guinness talk though!
