VIDEO: A giant red ball went on a rolling rampage and it's wonderful
The city of Toledo, Ohio, was host to a colourful spectacle last week as a 15-foot red ball escaped from its handlers and rolled through the streets.
The ball - an art installation called the Red Ball Project - was wedged between two buildings in the area before strong winds somehow managed to shake the 113kg (250kg) ball free.
Captured on Instagram by Jeremy Falke(jeremy419), the clip shows handlers sprinting down the road after the enormous sphere. Watching closely, you can see a motorist open their car door - and slam it shut just before the ball rolls over where they would have been if they exited their vehicle.
Jeremy later uploaded another photo, attributed to "Rory", who seems to have been the person in the vehicle - showing his view of the incoming red doom.
Eventually, the winds blew it directly into a lamp post - giving handlers just enough time to stabilise it. Otherwise, it could have kept on rolling - but no-one was hurt in this incident.
ABC news reported that the ball managed to come free thanks to a combination of bad weather effects.
"It started pouring rain, so the ball was wet and slippery," the Toledo Museum of Art told ABC News.
"The wind picked up, and it popped up and just started going. You can see in the video that's going viral that it rolled about halfway down a block and then mysteriously took a left-hand turn. It made its way partially down the street before people caught up with it."
Created by artist Kurt Perschke, the bid red ball has been on tour for 10 years, occupying spaces between buildings and in doorways - and it's never gone on a roll before.
It's now going to be shipped to France for an appearance in Marseilles and Bordeaux - where, we're sure, it will stay where it's supposed to.
