Chicago-based author Bill Hillmann, who co-wrote a book on surviving the bull run, is one of two people gored by bulls during the third running of the San Fermin festival.

The Navarra regional Government identified a 32-year-old American man by his initials, with local news outlets naming him as the writer.

It is understood he was gored in his right thigh during this morning's run, which began at approximately 8am.

Another 35-year-old Spaniard was gored in the chest. Both men were earlier described as being in a serious condition.

Hillmann is one of five authors behind Fiesta: How To Survive The Bulls Of Pamplona, published on June 19 last.

"Buffalo" Bill Hillmann, who contributed the chapters on how to run, is described by the book's editor as "the best young English-speaking bull-runner on the streets today". Hillmann is also the author of Chicago novel The Old Neighbourhood.

So far, three people have been gored in total this year and many injured. 15 people have died since 1924 from gorings, and dozens are injured every year.
