Meldrew actor can't believe fans still want to hear catchphrase

Nearly a decade after the last episode of 'One Foot In The Grave', the show’s star says he is still plagued by fans shouting Victor Meldrew’s famous catchphrase "I don't believe it!".

Richard Wilson, 72, played the cantankerous pensioner in six series of the hit BBC comedy.

He told the Radio Times that filming Merlin, a drama about King Arthur’s sorcerer, came as a welcome break.

“Filming Merlin at that chateau in France was incredible,” he told the magazine.

“One advantage of filming in France was that I didn’t get much of ’the catchphrase’.”

Asked if people still shouted the line at him in the street, Wilson replied: “Yes, all the time. It gets irritating.

“I usually wave and avoid eye contact. The worst is when people want you to say it.

“I don’t, but they pay their licence fee so they think they’ve a right to hear me say it to them.”
