Oasis will receive a Brit award for Outstanding Contribution to Music, it was announced today.

Noel and Liam Gallagher will be presented with their gong at the live music ceremony in February.

Previous recipients include The Beatles, U2, Paul Weller, Tom Jones, Sting, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Eurythmics and The Who.

Peter Jamieson, chairman of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), which organises the Brits, said: “Oasis set the standard for many of the young rock bands who are currently enjoying success in the UK charts.

“As the Brit awards go live for the first time in nearly two decades, it is appropriate that we should honour one of the most exciting live acts the UK has produced.”

The Manchester-born band are credited with bringing guitar music back to the charts and inspiring new names like Kasabian and the Arctic Monkeys.

They have sold more than 50 million records worldwide and been declared the Most Successful Act of the Last Decade in the UK.

Oasis have won Brits for Best British Breakthrough Act (1995), Best British Album (What’s The Story) Morning Glory, Best British Group and Best British Video in 1996.

The awards are being held at Earls Court in London on February 14 and will be broadcast live on ITV.
