Jolie and Pitt visit quake-ravaged Pakistan
Hollywood superstars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt made a low-key visit to earthquake-ravaged northern Pakistan today, UN refugee agency officials said.
Jolie, who is a goodwill ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, travelled with Pitt to a village in a remote valley on an unannounced trip, flying aboard a helicopter that brought food, blankets and plastic sheets to improve shelters, UNHCR spokesman Jack Redden said.
He said Pitt and Jolie, who arrived in the country today, also visited the hard-hit town of Balakot and a tent camp for quake survivors who lost their homes in the October 8 quake that killed more than 87,000 people, the vast majority of them in Pakistan.
Jolie planned to take part in a news conference tomorrow in the capital, Islamabad, along with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, who toured quake-stricken areas separately from Jolie and Pitt today.
Pitt has been sporadically spotted and photographed with Jolie for months, but media were not told of the trip to the quake zone until after they had left. The two met with staff on Tuesday at the UNHCR headquarters in Geneva.
