It's all a mistake, says drugs probe Doherty

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty protested his innocence after being quizzed by police following an anti-drugs operation.

The on/off boyfriend of model Kate Moss emerged from Telford police station in Shropshire yesterday to claim officers were a “a pain in the arse” and had mistaken an implant aimed at keeping him off drugs for “hard stuff”.

He was speaking ahead of tonight’s Sky One documentary, 'Kate Moss: Fashion Victim?', screened at 10pm, which shows video footage of the supermodel allegedly snorting cocaine.

West Mercia Police said a man arrested on suspicion of possessing class A drugs had been released on police bail until December.

But Doherty – who was detained for more than 12 hours after playing a gig in Shrewsbury on Saturday night – denied he had been arrested, claiming: “It’s just some sort of mistake, that’s all.”

Unbuttoning his trousers to show photographers the implant in his lower abdomen, the star quipped: “It’s just a prescribed thing.

“It’s for an implant and they thought it was ’hard stuff’.

“I have got to get a letter from the doctor and in the words of Samuel Johnson, the law is a pain in the arse.”

He added: “Every day of this tour we have been told we are going to get raided and basically, they (the police) have found f*** all.”

Insisting that he was no longer taking drugs, Doherty said: “The only drugs I had on me were prescription drugs in my implant, but it had gone septic and it’s spewing them out.

“Speaking for myself, I have been clean on this tour.

“It’s libellous to call me a smackhead – it’s a good job I am too disorganised to sue.”

Earlier, a woman who will face no further action was freed after also being quizzed on suspicion of possessing class A drugs.

It is understood that the band’s two coaches were seized during the anti-drugs operation.
