Colin Firth was warned by aghast female friends that he would “ruin” the heart-throb character Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, he has revealed.

Firth’s soaking wet appearance from a lake in the BBC adaptation made a generation of women weak at the knees, but his friends found the whole episode hysterical, he said.
