Kidman commits to Von Trier trilogy

Although Nicole Kidman had a tough time filming Dogville for the demanding Danish director Lars Von Trier, she has committed to star in the next two films of his American-set trilogy U, S and A, reports the New York Post.

“I like the idea of playing the same character through a trilogy – I’ve never done it before,” she said. “I think that once you make that leap of faith with something you have to commit to it.”

But, she admitted, it was not easy being physically violated, verbally abused and forced to wear an iron dog collar attached to a chain and wheel, as she was during the filming of Dogville.

In the 1930s-set morality tale, which was filmed in Sweden, Kidman plays a fugitive who, fleeing from gangsters, winds up in a wretched, isolated Rocky Mountain town where the neighbours aren’t what they seem.

She said the first week working with von Trier was “tricky”, but after a “three-hour, warts-and-all, tears and screaming walk in the forest, we came out of it with a very pure commitment to each other”.
