MODEL, and mother of two, Claudine Keane is no stranger to keeping fit and healthy. Being married to professional footballer Robbie Keane undoubtedly encourages her to stay on top of her game physically but also as the mother of two young boys, the Dublin woman knows how important it is for the whole family to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly.

Having recently launched SPAR’s Better Choices Kids campaign for 2017 in time for the upcoming back to school season, Claudine says being a parent means ensuring you set a good example for your children.

“It’s so important to provide healthy options for our kids and also to encourage a good diet by eating healthily ourselves,” she says. “We all eat a lot of fresh food and have a very balanced diet. And on top of that, we are a very active family and make sure to get out and about every day, even if it’s just walking the dog. However, having said that, we do also have treats as these are important too.

“At the end of the day, for us, it’s all about living as healthily as possible – eating well, exercising, being happy in your own skin and spending time with your family and friends.”

What shape are you in?

I would have to say I’m quite happy with the shape I’m in. I try my best to maintain a balanced diet — but of course, I would allow treats every now and again as I believe in ‘everything in moderation’ when it comes to my diet.

What are your healthiest eating habits?

I eat a lot of fresh fish, fruit and vegetables and so do the rest of the family.

I love carrot and hummus packs and fresh cut fruit salads because they’re super convenient.

I also try to drink at least two litres of water a day —mind you that can be tricky when juggling a busy schedule.

What are your guiltiest pleasures?

I really love chocolate, so that is definitely my guilty pleasure. But I try to choose wisely so would tend to opt for a Fulfil Bar — the Mint Choc flavour is my favourite.

What would keep you awake at night?

As a parent, any worries concerning the kids tend to play havoc with my sleep pattern and that would be the only thing that would keep me awake at night. Apart from that I am a pretty good sleeper.

How do you relax?

Bringing our family dog ‘Wilson’ on a walk is my go-to activity for relaxing. However, if I was to arrange a treat for myself, I’d choose a soothing massage.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?

I would ask Blake Lively, as I’ve always admired her sense of style; Bono, who is a fantastic ambassador for Ireland and a really interesting character; Michelle Obama, who I think is an inspirational individual and a strong role model for women of all ages; and Meryl Streep, a complete legend. I’m a big fan of so many of her movies.

What’s your favourite smell?

It’s Jo Malone’s Pomegranate Noir. I also love the smell of cinnamon, as it always reminds me of Christmas.

What would you like to change about your appearance?

If you asked me that question before I had my kids I would probably have a long list of things I wanted to change. But as you grow up, I think you learn to become comfortable in your own skin.

Also, I want to set a good example for my sons so I take care of myself and I embrace me for me.

When is the last time you cried?

When my mom and I visited my grandmother’s home in County Laois and it brought back a few childhood memories, which led to some tears.

What traits do you least like in others?

People not having manners. I think it’s so important to be polite and respectful to others.

This is something Robbie and I instil in our boys every day.

What traits do you least like about yourself?

I suppose it would be the fact that I think too deeply about things.

As a mum of two young children, I tend to worry about the little things, although I suppose this is to be expected.

I try to approach life’s situations with a level head and remember to not be so hard on myself — it’s a work in progress being a mom, as we are always learning.

Do you pray?

I find comfort by praying in certain situations.

What would cheer up your day?

Simply seeing my kids happy and healthy — at the end of the day that is all that really matters.
