The School of Music by Meurig and Rachel Bowen (Wide Eyed, €17.80 HB)

For the student who joins this school of music there are three main areas of exploration.

Term one deals with the various types of music from yodelling to trad jazz.

A big plus here is the link to allow students to hear samples of each genre online.

The second series of lessons deals with the technical side of music — rhythm, notes, keys, harmony, melody and the work of the composer.

The third series gives invaluable insight on making music at home, what instrument would suit you best, and most importantly how we can share our love of music with others.

There is a fascinating explanation of sound-wave measurement which creates patterns in music; the importance of major and minor keys and when they are used; and how a musician interprets a composer’s instructions on tempo and style.

This is an outstanding introduction to all aspects of music, informative and educational, but also quite lighthearted in its encouragement of young would-be musicians to fashion instruments from glasses and saucepans and create their own kitchen orchestra.

The comic illustrations by Daniel Frost are a treat. Suitable for age seven and upwards.

Grandad’s Secret Giant by David Litchfield (Frances Lincoln, €13.90 HB)

Billy and his friends have laboured all day to paint a town mural but find they can’t reach the top of the wall to finish it off.

Grandad suggests calling on a friend of his who just happens to be a giant.

Billy is dubious about his existence but Grandad persists in detailing the many good deeds done by the giant.

When Billy’s dog begins barking next morning he goes to investigate and finds the giant hard at work on the mural.

However, Billy’s natural instinct is to make himself scarce — which of course is very hurtful for the giant according to Billy’s Grandad. A plan is hatched to tempt the giant back.

If Billy’s dog was placed on a high platform perhaps the giant would rescue him again.

A beautiful story about recognising differences. Suitable for five and upwards.
