The Player of Games by Iain M Banks. Has a paragraph in it about why chess is dull in comparison to something like poker, because it has no random chance in it. Because life is random, not ordered. Helped me intellectualise my poker habits.
I watched Blade Runner: The Final Cut last month. Spent a few weeks worrying I was replicant.
Robert Glasper Experiment in the Cork Jazz Festival. It was like a cross between a 70’s James Brown gig and a 90’s Tribe Called Quest album, whilst Miles Davis wandered around messing with all the harmony. Oh and Stevie Wonder sang over the top through a vocoder. Bizarre, raw, fractured, wild, unforgiving. Brilliant stuff.
‘Steep Hills of Vicodin Tears’ by A Winged Victory for the Sullen. It would bust your heart open.
The first music I ever bought was a tape of Bad by Michael Jackson. I can remember hearing ‘Dirty Diana’ and thinking “This may be the coolest sound on Earth”. It made me feel powerful, those big metal bar hits.
Gomez in the Olympia years and years ago. They were two hours late ’cause they lost all their gear in transit. Then they came out and just blew the place out. It was incredible.
Comedy, Comedy, Comedy. I have watched all of Arrested Development some 30+ times. It’s a problem of mine.
Don’t do radio, but podcast, I listen to WTF by Marc Maron and There is no such thing as a fish, and Here’s the Thing by Alex Baldwin. That man’s voice is like sugar-coated honey.
Prince/Kayne/Freddie Mercury: We could call it Upstaged. I’d love to see those three guys try outdo one another.
Ian Dempsey: Met him on the street in Dublin after a gig, he was clearly out on the tear. I went to try and do a Zig and Zag voice, and he cut me off immediately and told me to cop on while I was in mid flight. Absolutely brilliantly, hilarious. Celebrity Slam.
Well, the Powers ran half of Ireland, so no doubt.
My robe. I cannot express enough how much everyone should have a robe in their lives.
Behind the scenes crews and teams that make events happen. It’s thankless, tough, poorly paid, and stressful. And they hide what they do, so the punter doesn’t realise its required. Always remember, when you see anything well-run, it took lots and lots of unknown people to make it so.
Thou shalt all be queens. And also eat cake. We’ve got very little time here.
