Mother overcome with emotion: ‘I got to vote for a woman for president’

You might be sick of the US Elections at this stage but something worth remembering is that this is the first time in 230 years that a woman could become President and that's a pretty big deal.

Mother overcome with emotion: ‘I got to vote for a woman for president’

What's even more important (and frankly shocking) is that Hillary Clinton is the first female candidate to even make it onto the ballot papers for one of the major political parties.

History is being made across the country as early voting got underway with voters able to cast their ballots for the candidate of their choice.

Many of them are voting for the first time, many have voted countless times before but it is the first time that a woman is a viable candidate for the next commander-in-chief.

One voter, Vickie Wilkinson, let the world know how she felt after casting her vote this week.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Ms Wilikinson's daughter Sarah Dean recalled the day that meant so much to her mother.

“I watched her hand in her ballot and took a picture of her...when we got back in the car, she was just so emotional.”

“I had forgotten what was happening. This has been such a circus of an election cycle.”

Ms Wilkinson gave her own reason for her emotions on that day.

“I’m 60 years old and this is the first time in my life, and anybody’s life here, that we’ve actually had a viable woman candidate for president of the United States. And she has a good shot at winning!”

“To think about how far we’ve come...the fight and struggle just to vote for an intelligent, qualified, viable woman ? it was just sort of overwhelming to me on that morning.
