Cinemas aren't getting smartphone-friendly any time soon

AMC has changed its mind about a proposed policy that would allow cinema goers to use their phones while watching certain films.

Earlier this week, AMC Entertainment's CEO Adam Aron said that the company was considering allowing people to use their smartphones during screenings. This didn't sit well with many people, and he has since said that this is an idea that has been "relegated to the cutting room floor."

In a statement released, Aron wrote, "There will be no texting allowed in any of the auditoriums at AMC Theaters. Not today, not tomorrow, and not in the foreseeable future."

AMC plans to make enhancements in its cinemas, promising more large screens, more comfortable seating, new food and beverage options, and even a better website and app. But allowing texting while films are on is off the cards.

The idea was originally aired as a way to get more young people to go to the cinema. "When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don't ruin the movie, they hear 'please cut off your left arm above the elbow,'" Aron told Variety. But AMC received swift and almost universally negative feedback in response to the proposal.
