Working Life: Dr Marie Cooke, HSE consultant orthodontist

I assess and treat up to 250 patients a week and see patients in both Cork and Kerry.

The first hour is spent on paperwork which includes going through referrals — children referred to our department under the School Dental Inspection scheme. I decide who is eligible for free orthodontic treatment. I prioritise urgent cases and these children are assessed within six weeks. I also check X-rays, answer queries and spend time planning patients’ treatments.
