DIY Tips: Cubism for beginners

Cube shelving floats on the wall, and can be composed in a number of ways to suit just about any space.

Its nice deep frame creates great shadow play either up-lit or by raking light side on. Rectangles can be placed side-on or upright. Resist using the top of the cube for ornaments, simply frame things inside. Paint wooden boxes up to suit.

WHAT YOU NEED:

* A number of pre-drilled cube shelves. Groups are the cheapest way to buy. Choose sizes and depths from the same range for harmony. Variation in depth adds interest.

* Wall anchors and matching screws to secure the ‘keyhole’ mechanism to hang the cube. These should come with the kit.

* Drill and bit

* Screwdriver, level and tape measure.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Decide on the arrangement of your cubes — 1950s style abstract, loose arrangements rely on placing the cubes close enough to have a relationship. Place larger cubes to the middle.

Set your cubes out on the floor to judge.

Drill out a position for your first box screw in the wall. For larger arrangements start at the centre box and work out.

Hold up the box to check position of the first screw and level to find next drill spot.

Continue drilling out and hanging, checking spacing carefully.
