DIY Tips: Demolishing damp spots
You must always deal with the original cause of any damp stain. Simply covering it over with paint, paper or a damp seal just sends the water ingress on an invisible journey. If the damp was a one-off event or is solved, get rid of any lingering ghost with this quick DIY project which will allow moisture to evaporate slowly over time.
* Soft natural bristle brush
* Ronseal Anti-damp, Thompsons One Coat Damp Seal or Paint, or Polyfilla Damp Seal (about €8-10 per 250ml).
* Anti-fungal wash
* Covers for flooring and filler for any cracks or dints in the plasterwork.
Instructions:
1 Ensure walls are clean and dry without saturating damp
2 Clean away any surface mould with an anti-fungal wash and clean off dust or debris
3 Fill any cracks with a malleable filler knife and ready mixed product.
4 Allow to dry and sand smooth
5 Open the windows to give yourself adequate ventilation
6 Apply your damp seal, going well over the stain with a large margin.
7Allow to dry for 6-12 hours.
8 Finish with your chosen emulsion.
