Lust for ‘Fifty Shades’ helps trilogy to top bestseller list
The books, which outline an S&M relationship in graphic detail and have become a worldwide phenomenon, also made English author EL James the highest-earning writer in Ireland during 2012.
According to the latest figures for book sales by consumer analysts Nielsen, the Fifty Shades series sold just under €3.5m in Ireland, including the boxed set.
In all, 411,000 copies of at least one of Shades books were sold in Ireland last year. The sexual fantasies of a middle-aged woman also dominated book sales by Easons.
James’s Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed reached the top three positions respectively in the list, while Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy occupied fifth, sixth and seventh positions with Catching Fire, Mockingjay, and Hunger Games. More than 176,000 Hunger Games books were sold last year.
In the year that saw the death of Maeve Binchy, Ireland’s bestselling author, it was appropriate that her final book, A Week in Winter, topped the mainstream fiction chart, and holds fourth place in the overall Eason bestseller chart for last year.
Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel came in at seventh place. Marian Keyes’ The Mystery of Mercy Close and Ross O’Carroll-Kelly’s The Shelbourne Ultimatum took the last two spots in the Top 10.
JK Rowling reached number 13 in the chart with The Casual Vacancy, her first adult novel since the Harry Potter series.
