The Menu: Real Bread Gathering to welcome Andrew Whitley
Whitley is guest of honour at the Real Bread Gathering (Dec 2) at Dublin’s Bernard Shaw, joining a panel including Food on the Edge founder and restaurateur/chef JP McMahon and in attendance will be some of the finest craft bakers in the land along with plenty of their wares for extended sampling.
Event is free but tickets must be reserved.
The Menu will be sad to see Good Things Café leave its Durrus HQ in West Cork though it is only moving a short skip up the road to Skibbereen.
The closing event, a Thanksgiving Dinner (Nov 28), is set to be the mother of all farewell parties with a menu to match. To book, call 027 61426.
Aasleagh Lodge, part of the Delphi Adventure Resort, host a Portuguese Wine Dinner (Nov 28) with chef Stefan Matz and James Nicholson Wine Merchant and while The Menu baulks at mentioning Christmas in November he will make exception for his much-loved Fleming’s Restaurant for an early Christmas at Fleming’s (Nov 28) including pre-dinner wine, 5-course festive tasting menu, entertainment and storytelling. Booking essential 021 4821621.
In the full flush of youth, The Menu only truly enjoyed a chilli experience if it involved a trip to the serious burns unit but as age accumulated, he realised the wisdom of the old saw, ‘less is more’.
Elbow Lane Smoke House Sauce certainly has chilli but it is a glow rather than an inferno, the better to leave other ingredients play an equal part in a tasty condiment, ideal for slathering on grilled meat or fish or do as The Menu and mix it with mayonnaise to serve with homemade chips. www.smokehousesauce.ie
