Suckler open day planned for April on Roscommon farm
Attendees will hear from experts on how tech, heat detection aids, compact calving and improved handling facilities can streamline daily tasks.
A suckler cow breeding open day is planned for April 22, and will take place at the Newford suckler Farm in Skrine, Co Roscommon.
The event will focus on breeding and will provide farmers with information on how to improve herd performance and reduce labour through smarter tools and management practices.
The Newford farm is a joint partnership between Teagasc, Dawn Meats and McDonalds. This is the first major open day at this new location in County Roscommon since the herd moved from Athenry several years ago.
The practical on-farm event will highlight key breeding tasks that suckler farmers should focus on in advance of the breeding season.
It will include genetics of the Newford suckler cow and terminal sires used, calving at 24 months of age, body condition scoring, nutrition planning, fertility management and heat detection.
Experts on the day will demonstrate how technologies such as heat detection aids, compact calving and improved handling facilities can streamline daily tasks and save valuable time for beef farmers.
Farmers attending will gain practical advice to boost conception rates, improve efficiency, and make suckler farming more sustainable and labour-friendly ahead of the breeding season.
“Artificial insemination (AI) offers significant benefits for suckler herds,” said Newford farm manager Shane McGuinness.
He said: “Using AI allows farmers to access superior genetics and tailor breeding to the farm’s goals, while also reducing the need for handling bulls on-farm and increasing overall efficiency and labour productivity."
