Irish farmers welcome EU measures on food chain transparency as they call for strengthened position

The observatory is expected to hold its first meeting in July, chaired by the directorate general of agriculture of the European Commission. 

The creation of this observatory that will look at production costs, margins and trading practices was announced in mid-March as one of the measures to strengthen the position of farmers in the food supply chain.

The establishment of a new EU agri-food chain observatory this summer is being welcomed by Irish farmers who are calling for a ban on below-cost purchasing of their produce.
