Scientists map bees throughout Europe
Scientists have mapped distribution of bumblebees in Europe.
The results show most species are located in central Europe, but decrease towards European coasts, partly due to unsuitably hot Mediterranean weather.
They mapped distribution of 47 most common bumblebee species, which are known to be important pollinators.
Pollinators are declining globally, exacerbated by pesticide use and habitat loss.
Pollination plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and agriculture,
notably by increasing yields of fruits and vegetables.
The study was carried out by scientists from the EU’s Joint Research Centre and from the Status and Trends of European Pollinators project. The map will be used by organisations that monitor and mitigate bumblebee decline.
