Glanbia and Dairygold’s green barley and wheat price is €205, about 40% higher than the 2017 prices.

These are the highest prices in six years, at €205 (VAT excluded) per tonne for barley and wheat.

Quality adjustments to Dairygold prices are as per terms and conditions, and include a premium based on minimum purchase terms.

Glanbia prices are for grain delivered to drying locations, and include a €2/tonne co-op bonus to all members, and grain trading bonus scheme worth up to €10/t, based on how much qualifying inputs are purchased.

Other Dairygold prices are €200 for oats, €235 for contract malting barley, €240 for beans, and €360 for oilseed rape.

A Dairygold spokesperson said grain quality is excellent across all parameters.

Glanbia Chairman Martin Keane said: “We are pleased that harvest prices for 2018 are the highest in six years, and quality was generally very good across all crops.

“However, the challenging weather resulted in winter crops generally yielding between 0.3 and 0.8 tonnes per acre below the five-year average. Spring yields were down by 1.0 to 1.5 tonnes per acre on the five-year average. Glanbia farmers managed to fill all of our premium contracts, which account for over 40% of the total intake.” Prices include a €3 per tonne allowance for delivery to a drying location, or higher for growers more than 15km from the intake.

Martin Keane said: “Over 40% of our total grain intake now attracts a market premium above the base price.

“For example, across all contracts, the weighted average price paid for barley to Glanbia Co-op members this harvest is €225 per tonne including transport allowance, premiums and trading bonus.”

Other member prices quoted are €215 for contracted winter barley; €237 for malting barley; €215 for equine oats; €231 for standard food grade oats; €245 for gluten-free oats; €200 for un-contracted feed oats; €356 for oilseed rape; and €237 for feed beans. Non-member prices are €12 less.
