Bacteriophages can help safeguard drugs in human medicine, by accompanying or replacing antibiotics used to treat bacterial disease in livestock, says the UK’s Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance (RUMA).

It was responding to promising research results at the University of Leicester, where 20 bacteriophages (bacterial viruses) that target 72 potentially drug-resistant problem-causing bacteria in pigs were isolated.
