On Saturday my family floated off to France leaving me here on dry land to cover the marts and keep you updated on livestock markets and trends.
Honestly, sometimes I wonder if I take my job away too seriously.
Anyway we will sail on and our first port of call this week is Kilmallock mart on Monday.
Kilmallock had 1,000 cattle and calves on offer on Monday and while this number is back on the mart’s peak, the prices certainly haven’t eased.
A bit like a dance where partners might be scarce, it makes those available all the more appealing.
The larger bullock with good scope, who will be gone before Christmas, was leading the charge in Kilmallock. It’s all about size this week.
For instance, one nice bunch of six Friesian bullocks I spotted, with good potential to pound on the weight, weighing 618kg made €1,075. While another bunch from the same herd weighing 560kg made €995.
All were born in the spring of 2014, so they were nice young cattle to boot.
Bullocks in Kilmallock on Monday made up to €2.58 per kg. Weanlings hit €2.77 per kg. Dry cows (Kilmallock had 125 on offer) went to a high of €1.98 per kg.
Heifers sold for up to €2.90 per kg. The mart had 37 dairy stock on offer, here hitting a high of €1,200 (paid for a six-year-old calved cow).
Sucklers sold for up to €1,510 (paid for a two-year-old in-calf Angus, time up August 17 to Aberdeen Angus).

Next we turn to Kanturk mart and to mart manager Seamus O’Keeffe who gave us the following report after Tuesday’s cattle sale.
“We had a smaller sale today of 500 animals. Bullocks were easier with heifers and dry cows the same,” he said.
“Calves here were in great demand, especially Aberdeen Angus and Hereford calves.
“On July 26, we will hold our first autumn born weanling show and sale, kindly sponsored by Boherbue Co-Op Creameries. Also on this day there will be a free draw with cash prizes for all the buyers and sellers of calves in 2016. And this draw is kindly sponsored by AIB Kanturk.”
