Farmers in West Cork are gearing up to send cream through Carbery for production of Kerrygold butter, when the new Ornua Centre of Excellence opens in Mitchelstown in May.

Milk sent to the facility must meet strict export regulations, and one of the directions going out to West Cork milk producers is to take all precautions to prevent the trichloromethane residue which can arise from interaction of milk with detergent and sterilising solvents (which contain active chlorine, used to clean milking and milk storage equipment).

Effective rinsing to remove these solvents completely from the equipment is the main precaution.
