Teagasc advice: 10 hazardous waste collections
Teagasc; the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine; local authorities; WEEE Ireland, the European Recycling Platform; and Enva Ireland Ltd are to collaborate on the venture.
This provides farmers with an excellent opportunity to dispose of their hazardous wastes in a manner that protects human health, livestock and the environment.
Waste types accepted include pesticides and biocides; veterinary medicines and animal healthcare wastes; needles and syringes; waste paints; aerosols; corrosives (acids, detergents); oil and air filters; oily wastes; brake fluids; brake pads; antifreeze; adhesives; coolants; grease cartridges; and creosote (all charged at €2/kg, excluding 13.5% Vat).
Contaminated empty plastic containers (which contained pesticide, biocides, dairy hygiene products, paints, waste oil, antifreeze, creosote) of 1-205 litres are charged at €4/kg, excluding 13.5% Vat.
Waste engine oil and waste hydraulic oil, including their containers which are used for transport of these waste oils to the collection centre are accepted free of charge.
Waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) such as TVs, computers, fridges, freezers, power tools, kettles; all batteries and fluorescent lamps including CLFs, are accepted free of charge.

* November 17 at Cahir Mart, Co Tipperary;
* November 27 at Bandon Mart, Co Cork.
Collection centres will open from 9:30am to 3:30pm.

Farmers will greatly assist in the efficient and safe operation of the farm hazardous waste collection centres by noting the following guidance and information.
* Each waste must be identifiable, segregated and packaged to avoid leaks during transport and off-loading.
* Only identified wastes will be accepted; wastes which cannot be identified or clearly labelled will not be accepted.
* Waste engine and hydraulic oils should not be mixed with other substances, including vegetable oil.
* Mixed wastes will not be accepted on sites.
* All needles and syringes to be delivered to the centres in a separate sealed container.
* Farmers should load their wastes so they can be off-loaded at the operational areas at each centre (waste oil, WEEE and battery, and hazardous waste).
* Farmers will be required to off-load their wastes as directed by site operatives.
* Payment by cash, cheque or card is required on the day. All wastes will be rounded up to the nearest kilogram.
* Farmers will be issued with a receipt of payment and a certificate of transfer of the control of waste on each day.
* Farm plastics such as silage wrap, fertiliser and feed bags, netting; and triple-rinsed clean pesticide and dairy hygiene containers will not be accepted, recycle these through your local farm plastic recycling bring centre.
* Wastes can not be dropped off before or after the designated collection day.
* Collection centres will open from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
