Young Farmer winner to be unveiled
Ambitious young farmers with at least three years experience were invited to enter the competition, representing their sector.
Now in its 17th year, the competition is run by organisers, Macra na Feirme, with sponsors, FBD, and partners, the Irish Farmers Association, and with the help of the current holder of the title, Seán O’Donnell.
Sector prizes have been introduced this year to recognise the achievements of young farmers in all enterprises. Macra says it is a positive and exciting time in farming and the competition is an ideal platform to highlight the strength and ambition of the industry.
IFA president Eddie Downey said the competition provides young farmers with a wonderful opportunity to display their talent, innovation and determination to drive the industry.
“Since it began, we have had very worthy winners of this prestigious title and I know this year will be no different,” he said.
“The awards for each sector reflect the diverse talent that exists among the farming community.”
Speaking at the competition launch earlier this year, FBD company secretary Conor Gouldson said the showcase event encourages young farmers to be a champion for their sector.
Entrants are judged according to a number of criteria including farm business initiative and innovation, levels of farm efficiency and enterprise quality, farm safety and environmental protection awareness, as well as agricultural knowledge and community involvement.
A total of 39 young farmers went through to the semi-finals. Six finalists will compete for the top awards. Their names will be announced at lunchtime tomorrow. They wll then undergo final interviews.
Prizes will be awarded in all farm sectors, dairy, beef, sheep, tillage, and others.
